Problems/Comments

In 1990, petroleum contaminated soil was encountered during renovation of the historic Tyonek Timber Co. housing camp located one mile west of the pulp plant. The two areas of concern include: the well house and the former 2,500 gallon underground HOT. Approximately 50 cubic yards of contaminated soil was excavated from the 2,500 gallon HOT and stockpiled on site. The excavation of contaminated soil was halted when it was determined contamination was migrating off site. At the well house, contamination was encountered during the water supply system improvement activities. Improvements consisted of a new perforated pipe for collecting lake water and a treatment system for purifying lake water. During excavation for the new collector pipe, contaminated soil was encountered between the well house and the lake (note: according to a 1991 correspondence, the water well near the generator building had an oil smell and taste, and a water sample collected contained free product). Ten cubic yards of soil was removed at the limits of the pipe excavation to a depth of 1 foot bgs and added to the onsite stockpile. Contamination, which extended around the well house foundation, was left in place. The onsite stockpile was landspread on the old runway in 1991.
