Problems/Comments

The non-directional Beacon (NDB) Bulk Fuel Area consists of five aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) and drums formerly located at the end of the aircraft runway at the Skwentna Air Station. The four former 10,000-gallon ASTs at the NDB Bulk Fuel Area were located slightly south of the runway apron, and approximately 250 feet from the runway centerline. Stained surface soil and stressed vegetation was documented at each of the four former AST footprints during a site visit in 2001. DRO and GRO were detected in soil samples at the site at concentrations up to 21,000 mg/kg and 4,100 mg/kg, respectively. DRO was detected in groundwater at the site at concentrations up to 2.23 mg/L. A site investigation was performed in 2014, and petroleum contamination was assessed using the hydrocarbon risk calculator (HRC). The HRC results indicate that site conditions are not protective of human health under an unrestricted land use scenario. Risk posed the groundwater ingestion pathway is unacceptable. The main risk drivers are the DRO aromatics and DRO aliphatics in the groundwater ingestion pathway.

2/9/2011 Update or Other Action ADEC recieved a Draft report for the cleanup of the dump and other sites at the FAA Skwentna Air Station. Jonathan Schick
6/10/2011 Update or Other Action ADEC staff submitted numerous comments on the Draft Report detailing the removal of impacted soils at the dump site and around the Skwentna Air Station. Overall the report required thorough revisions to make it more readable and consistent. Also additional characterization and cleanup work remains at the sites and the recommended site closures from the report were not accepted by ADEC. Jonathan Schick
6/13/2011 Update or Other Action ADEC recieved an email from the FAA remedial project manager informing us that the report was going to be rejected and another draft will be submitted. Jonathan Schick

8/8/2013 Site Characterization Workplan Approved The ADEC Contaminated Site Program approved the 2013 Final Work Plan FAA Site Investigation, FAA Station Skwentna, Alaska. The proposed work included investigations at the Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) Bulk Fuel Area, Simultaneous Broadcast Range with Adcock Antenna (SBRA) Range Building, Control Tower (CT) Building, Dump Number 1, Shop Drum Area, Pesticide Sprayer Area, and the NDB Drum Pond Area. Jessica Morris
12/29/2014 Site Characterization Report Approved The ADEC Contaminated Site Program approved the 2014 Final Site Investigation and Hydrocarbon Risk Calculator Report for the, FAA Station Skwentna, Alaska. HRC results indicate that site conditions for the NDB Bulk Fuel Area are not protective of human health under an unrestricted land use scenario. Risk posed by the groundwater ingestion pathway is unacceptable. The primary risk drivers are DRO aromatics and DRO aliphatics in the groundwater ingestion pathway. Continued monitoring and institutional controls were recommended for the NDB Bulk Fuel Area. Characterization efforts were also conducted at the NDB Drum Pond, and all analytical results were less than the most stringent ADEC cleanup levels. No further action was recommended for the NDB Drum Pond. Jessica Morris
12/29/2014 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 72483 NDB facility. Jessica Morris
9/8/2016 Meeting or Teleconference Held A project meeting was held to discuss the soil sampling results for the pesticide background sampling. In order to move on to the cleanup portion of this project, we will need to agree on soil and sediment cleanup levels that are protective of all pathways and receptors. Jessica Morris
