Problems/Comments

Spillage/leakage during operation of cannery as far back as 1940s of oils, lubricants, cleaners, paints, thinners, solvents, pesticides, gasoline, waste oils. Extent to human health and environment unknown. GW contaminated but GW not locally used as a DW source. Property currently (06/06/92) going through bankruptcy court. Chugach Fisheries instructed to liquidate property to satisfy debts. Site assessment performed by David Dilen of URS Consultants for Commercial fishing and Agriculture Bank of Alaska. Last staff assigned was Krieber (2/12/97), then Pexton.

3/25/2009 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) has completed a review of the environmental records associated with the Orca Cannery located on Orca Inlet in Cordova, Alaska. Based on the information provided to date, it has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and no further remedial action will be required as long as the site is in compliance with established institutional controls. Description Details
Groundwater Use Restrictions Installation of groundwater wells will require approval from ADEC.
Advance approval required to transport soil or groundwater off-site. Standard condition.
Movement or use of contaminated material (including on site) in a manner that results in a violation of the water quality standards is prohibited (18 AAC 70) Standard condition.
