Problems/Comments
On June 13, 1992, approximately 4,200 gallons of gasoline were released from the Quinhagak tank farm, operated by Qanirtuuq, Inc. Most of the gasoline traveled downslope to a flat area at the edge of tidally-influenced marsh. Cleanup of marsh souls and water was completed in summer 1992 but an approximately 300 cubic yard stockpile of contaminated tundra remains in a lined containment cell. Contaminant concentrations in the stockpiled tundra, which has been loosely described as more vegetation than soil, are unknown. During the spill response free product was collected by piling the tundra on a sloping liner with a trench at the downslope end. This allowed the gasoline to drain from the excavated tundra. Environmental Services Limited (ESL) responded to the spill and also contracted with Qanirtuuq to relocate the tank farm to a lined, bermed area. The tank farm was relocated during late summer 1992. ESL submitted a final spill report on December 8, 1992, which states that approximately 300 cubic yards of contaminated soil are stockpiled in a lined containment cell, and that the stockpile will be sampled and characterized after spring thawing. Last staff assigned was Dronenburg.
