Problems/Comments

In 1993, a Limited Environmental Background Assessment was conducted at the MarkAir Hangar Facility. Two unknown large stockpiles of fill were present on the western portion of the hangar adjacent to an above ground storage tank(AST). A 55-gallon drum of unknown contents and an oil pan containing used oil were present outside of the northwest corner of the hangar. The ground surface in the vicinity of the drum and oil pan was stained. Staining was also observed along the western side of the hanger near the northwest entrance to the hangar. The source of the staining is unknown. A “prominent hydrocarbon odor” was observed inside the hangar as well as floor drains. The floor drains are reportedly discharging into an unknown area. To determine potential extent of soil and groundwater contamination, three soil borings were advanced; two in the unpaved area west and southwest of the building and one south in a paved area. The borings were advanced 11 to 15 feet below ground surface (bgs), until bedrock was encountered. One soil sample collected from each boring at a depth of 2.5 feet bgs contained diesel range petroleum hydrocarbons (DRPH) up to 36.2 mg/kg and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) up to 283 mg/kg. Groundwater was encountered at 6.5 feet bgs in only one bore hole (B1) located west of the building adjacent to the AST. Two groundwater grab samples collected from this boring contained DRPH up to 211 mg/L and TPH up to 169 mg/L.
