Problems/Comments

Elevated levels of DRO present at 3 aboveground tanks and along 400 foot fuel pipeline. Sediments of Puntilla Lake contaminated with DRO at 2,400 mg/kg. Tanks and pipeline were removed in 1999, however no contaminated soil was excavated. UVOST screening and soil sampling occurred in 2011. Significant soil contamination, DRO and RRO. Five MWs installed and sampled. MW-04 is highly contaminated. As of 01/2022, the soil contamination has not been delineated. Have read that Puntilla Lake is used as a drinking water source for the Rainy Pass Lodge as well as, there are two drinking water wells for the lodge. FAA will retain ownership of the land until cleanup is complete.

6/22/2010 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Approved Phase 2 Release Investigation Work Plan to delineate the horizontal and vertical extent of petroleum contamitaion using Ultraviolet Optical Screening Tool (UVOST) with Laser-Induced Fluorescense (LIF) to provide real time field screening data, collecting soil samples for laboratory analysis, and installaing and sampling 5 monitoring wells to determine the presence of petroleum in the groundwater. Melody Debenham
5/14/2012 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved the Sampling and Analysis Plan describing the removal of lead-acid batteries near the Non Directional Beacon (NDB) area. An area approximately 20’ by 10’ contains broken lead-acid batteries, which will be removed and transported off site for disposal along with lead contaminated soil. Surface soil metals concentrations will be measured in the field using an x-ray fluorescence detector and confirmation samples will be collected for laboratory analysis. Melody Debenham
4/16/2013 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Received the final report documenting removal of lead-acid batteries and associated lead impacted soil at the Non Directional Beacon area. Broken lead-acid batteries and associated soil were removed from a 16’ by 17’ area and transported offsite for disposal. Field screening was performed using an x-ray fluorescence detector, and confirmation samples were collected for laboratory analysis. Confirmation sample results show lead contaminated soil remains onsite. The FAA will return to the site to perform additional removal actions. Melody Debenham
7/7/2014 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved final work plan for soil removal at lead battery area of concern and groundwater sampling at petroleum contamination area of concern. Field screening for lead will be performed with an x-ray fluorescence detector and confirmation samples will be collected and analyzed for lead once removal actions are complete. Groundwater at the petroleum contamination area of concern will be sampled for gasoline, diesel, and residual range organics and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes. Melody Debenham
11/4/2014 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Initial ranking with ETM completed for source area id: 79441 name: Battery Disposal Area near NDB Melody Debenham
11/10/2014 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved final 2014 Groundwater Monitoring and Soil Remediation Report. Groundwater sampling results shows DRO, GRO, and benzene remain above cleanup levels. Approximately 1.5 cubic feet of lead contaminated soil was removed from the battery disposal area and transported offsite for disposal. Confirmation sampling shows remaining concentrations of lead are below the cleanup level. Melody Debenham
