Problems/Comments
Diesel contamination. Approximately 1500 cubic yards contaminated soils from Lot 1 remediation excavation stockpiled on site (1995). DRO to 41,000 ppm, GRO to 3,500 ppm, and BTEX to 194.3. 1997 stockpiled soil treated with bioremediation. 1999 monitoring samples still show DRO at levels above ADEC cleanup levels - 6,000 mg/kg. 2006 monitoring event shows no contamination above ADEC cleanup levels. Water table varies between 4 and 10' below land surface. Abandoned equipment removed. Scattered drums removed. Airport (McClures) Drive.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
9/16/1993 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = RAPR - Remedial Action Plan Review (CS)). Reviewed a draft workplan: "Environmental Site Assessments for Community Enterprise Development of Alaska, August, 1993", prepared by Montgomery Watson and received by ADEC/WDO 9/3/93. Insufficient information was available for adequate plan review and approval. Phase I or II Site Assessments needed for most of the AC Store sites. | Eileen Olson |
10/15/1993 | Cleanup Level(s) Approved | Alternate Cleanup Levels Approved this date. | Ray Dronenburg |
6/1/1994 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = RARR - Remedial Action Report Review (CS)). Reviewed the Environmental Assessment and Cleanup Plans for 33 properties - Final Report. Plans are approved except that 1) the department reserves the right to review and approve a stockpile plan and those plans should be provided with a 3 week review period; 2) should the collection and subsequent treatment of GW be required, a discharge permit for treated waters returned to the environment may be required; and 3) burning of waste oils for purposes other than heat recovery is prohibited. | Ray Dronenburg |
11/18/1994 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = RARR - Remedial Action Report Review (CS)). After reviewing the "Draft Environmental Assessments and Cleanup Plans for 33 Property Transfers in 16 Alaskan Communities", additional corrective action is needed for this site. | Cindy Thomas |
11/18/1994 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = SA2R - Phase II SA Review (CS)). Reviewed the "Draft Environmental Assessments and Cleanup Plans for 33 Property Transfers in 16 Alaskan Communities". | Cindy Thomas |
11/27/1996 | Site Added to Database | Diesel contamination. Work has been accomplished at McGrath but site is not ready for closure. | Ray Dronenburg |
11/14/1997 | Update or Other Action | ADEC letter to Alaska Village Environmental Management asking to continue remediation or analyze for carcinogenic PAH for a higher risk-based alternative cleanup levels. | Shah Alam |
3/9/1998 | Update or Other Action | ADEC received a letter dated March 1, 98 from Simon Schroeder about sampling and soil removal from biocells. | Shah Alam |
4/21/1998 | Site Ranked Using the AHRM | Ranking action added now because it was not added when the site was originally ranked. | Bill Petrik |
7/15/1998 | Update or Other Action | ADEC staff commented on a biocell sampling work plan. | Shah Alam |
10/7/1998 | Update or Other Action | ADEC received a closure report from AVES. 1998 bio cell sampling showed DRO levels at 950 ppm (Biocell #1), 310 ppm (Biocell #2), and up to 6,000 ppm i(Biocell #3). [Added by SUzzell 7/06] | Shah Alam |
7/29/1999 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | At AVES' request ADEC project managers met AVES staff (Greg Christensen, Bruce Erickson) to discuss issues related to closure of the sites. AVES asked ADEC to consider biogenic interference, averaging of samples, and, to accept samples without QA/QC. AVES will provide alternative cleanup level computations using Method Three. | Shah Alam |
8/19/2002 | Update or Other Action | Sent review letter in response to an information request from a potential property buyer and copied Alaska Village Initiatives. Letter stated that contaminant levels have not been assessed since 1997 and recommends sampling to determine the effectiveness of natural attenuation. | Elizabeth Stergiou |
7/24/2006 | Update or Other Action | Changed file name from "Alaska Commercial Prop. - McGrath 2" to "Alaska Commercial Prop. - McGrath Lot 2" to better reflect site. Updated problem statement. | Shannon Oelkers |
7/24/2006 | Update or Other Action | Letter sent to AVI requesting updated information on the current status of the three bioremediation cells still located on Lot 2. | Shannon Oelkers |
8/11/2006 | Site Characterization Workplan Approved | SA WP submitted by Monaska. ADEC approval given. Site work to occur August 17, 2006. | Shannon Oelkers |
9/27/2006 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Received "McGrath Area Bio Cells Report of Findings" submitted by Monaska for Alaska Village Initiatives. Composite sampling of the 1500 cubic yards of stockpiled soils show no DRO contamination remaining above ADEC's most stringent cleanup levels. Sampling showed DRO from non-detect to 35 mg/kg. | Shannon Oelkers |
10/9/2006 | Site Closure Approved | The stockpiled soil at the McGrath Lot 2 property was successfully treated to meet the applicable cleanup levels. No further remedial action is required. Site closure is approved and this status will be noted on the ADEC database. | Shannon Oelkers |
