Problems/Comments

Historical fuel spillage events from fill system for two 10,000-gallon aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) and underground storage (UST) day tanks. A 1980 100-gallon diesel spill percolated through shot rock fill to the nearby lagoon where sorbent pads were used to recover some of the fuel. Product seepage and sheening on the lagoon continued for several years, generally following a large rainfall. Closure-in-place of two regulated Leaking Underground Storage Tanks (LUSTs) 12/1998. Facility ID# 3066, LUST event ID# 2752. ADL/LAS 21284, leased to ADF&G.

7/13/2006 Update or Other Action While doing site research for the ETM ranking project on ADOTPF - Hidden Falls Hatchery (1525.26.025) I found a UST Closure Assessment Report Review for ADOTPF which was completed for numerous ADOTPF sites in the state and this hatchery was included in this report. In this report it mentioned a spill of 40 gallons of diesel from an 4,000-gallon AST sometime between July and October in 1999. Contamianted soil (100 sq ft by 4.5 feet deep) was excavated and taken to Juneau for thermal remediation. The excavation pit samples contained 140 ppm GRO, 10,000 ppm DRO and 0.155 ppm benzene. Samples from the stockpile contained 332 ppm GRO, 12,600 ppm DRO and 0.08 ppm benzene. All of the contaminated soil was not excavated due to the fuel island instability. For more information see the site file. Evonne Reese
