Problems/Comments

10,000 UST near Composite Building was removed in 1991. Diesel contamination encountered during removal action; highest concentration exceeded 10,000 mg/kg. A bioventing system was installed at the site in 1995 to remediate the diesel contamination. This site is being used to track cleanups at all sites in the Cape Newenham LRRS, except SS08 and SS007.

The ADEC did not object to the USAF proceeding without a soil management plan because the activities proposed are limited to a small area at a depth below ground surface not known to be contaminated, but recommended one due to concern that the Cape Newenham facility has not been fully characterized for non-petroleum COPCs. Wendy Hansen

2/20/2020 CERCLA PA Staff reviewed a draft Preliminary Assessment (PA) Report for Aqueous Film Forming Foam, and provided comments. Historical records indicated that foam was used for fire suppression and response at the Cape Newenham installation and that it could have been AFFF. The PA did not confirm that a fire training area existed but that records indicate fire training activities likely occurred and that associated records no longer exist. A fire engine and foam tank were present at Cape Newenham. The PA recommended a Site Investigation, and identified drinking water groundwater, surface water, sediment, surface soil, and subsurface soil as potentially impacted media. Wendy Hansen

The work plan describes the planned site characterization activities at the TA001 site located on the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site, Alaska. The goal of this work is to address data gaps from previous site characterization efforts and to define the lateral and vertical extent of petroleum-related soil contamination at TA001, investigate groundwater and surface water impacts at TA001, and further investigate the extent of lead soil contamination at the former Tank 2 footprint within the Tank Area. The focus of this investigation will be on the Tank Area, Pipeline B, and Pumphouse. The related sites within the database are Cape Newenham LRRS POI 1 (File Number 2525.38.001) – includes only the Tank Area, and the Cape Newenham LRRS – Air Force (File Number 2525.38.001) – includes and tracks cleanups at all sites, except SS008 and SS007.
