5/30/2013 Site Characterization Report Approved The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Contaminated Sites Program (CSP), has completed its review of the subject report "Soil and Groundwater Confirmation Sampling Fire Station No. 6" for the above referenced site. The soil and groundwater confirmation report was was received at our Anchorage office by e-mail on April 22, 2013. The report presents the sampling results from the groundwater sampling that occurred on December 28, 2013 and January 2, 2013. Soil Sampling On December 28, 2012 one boring that was completed as a groundwater monitoring well was positioned between the former diesel UST and gasoline/diesel dispenser. Groundwater was encountered at 17 feet below ground surface. Three analytical soil samples plus one duplicate sample were collected and analyzed for diesel range organics (DRO); residual range organics (RRO); benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX); and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). DRO was detected in sample B1S7 at a concentration of 23.0 mg/kg, which is below its most stringent 18 AAC 75.341 Method 2 cleanup level of 250 mg/kg. There were no other target analyte detections in the soil samples. Groundwater Sampling On January 2, 2013, one groundwater samples and one duplicate were collected from the previously developed monitoring well B1MW. Groundwater samples were analyzed for DRO, GRO, BTEX, and PAHs. Groundwater samples did not exceed their 18 AAC 75.345 Table C cleanup levels. Groundwater flow was not determined. However, data from other nearby contaminated sites, e.g., Debarr Wal-Mart indicate that the groundwater flow direction in the unconfined aquifer is to the southwest. . CSP Response CSP suggests that you may want to discuss with your consultant potential closure for this site. CSP requests that a conceptual site model be submitted in order for that site to be considered for closure Katrina Chambon
