Problems/Comments

A 1991 Phase II Site Assessment detected petroleum contamination from two 500 gallon tanks at the Matanuska Telephone Association (MTA) facility in Healy, Alaska. One tank held diesel (installed 1976) and was used to supply the backup generator. One tank held gasoline (installed 1985) for fueling MTA vehicles. Contamination is likely from spills and overfills. In 1991 the diesel tank was removed. Approximtely 17 cubic yards of soil were removed during excavation and was approved by ADEC staff to be landspread on site. In 1992 the gasoline tank was removed. A total of 13 cubic yards were excavated and thermally remediated at ESI in Fairbanks. Analytical samples taken from the limits of both excavations were below ADEC cleanup levels. Complete data packages were submitted by the consultant, however a complete report detailing the results of the corrective action plan and tank removal were never submitted. Review of the lab data by ADEC staff and application of the lab QA/QC checklist provided information about the quality and usability of the data submitted.
