Problems/Comments

During October of 1994, three USTs (diesel, gasoline and jet fuel) from Area A, located just beyond the southwest corner of the former aircraft support building were removed. In October 1995, one gasoline UST and one diesel UST were removed from Area B, which is east of the aircraft support building. At this time, two gasoline and one diesel UST were installed in Area C, southeast of the aircraft support building. Approximately 350 cubic yards of contaminated soil were excavated during the combined tank activity and moved to the 5472 Mail Trail property. In 2008 the three Area C USTs were subsequently removed and an additional 70 cubic yards of contaminated soil was transported to the Mail Trail property. Subsequent reporting indicated that surface and sub-surface contaminated soil delineated by field and laboratory samples were removed. Groundwater contamination reportedly remains near the former aircraft support building and monitoring programs have been inconsistent and inconclusive.

9/13/2006 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other July 2006 Groundwater Monitoring Report received. Four monitoring wells were installed on this property in 2000. MW-1, and MW-3 were not viable during the 2006 sampling event; both wells contained DRO contamination above MCLs when first sampled (9.95 and 11.0 mg/L). MW-2, and MW-4 were sampled in July 2006. MW-2 dropped from 2.05 to 0.92 mg/L DRO. MW-4 rose from 1.59 to 1.73 mg/L DRO during this same interval. DRO was the only contaminant of concern at this site. Recommend replacing MW-1, and MW-3. Kim DeRuyter
12/14/2006 Update or Other Action Rockwell Engineering called to say they had been contracted by Everts to replace broken monitoring wells at the site next spring, as requested in my letter to the RP. Kim DeRuyter

6/4/2008 Underground Storage Tank Site Characterization or Assessment Reviewed work plan for 2008 UST removal. They will also remove all structures and dispenser/ piping. They will install two broken/ missing MWs. They will sample/ treat 390 cy stock pile on mail trail road. Approved work plan based on conditions. Neal Everson
8/15/2008 Update or Other Action 70 cubic yards of DRO contaminated soil was transported off site to 5472 Mail Trail storage yard. Neal Everson
1/2/2009 Site Characterization Report Approved Received excavation report for UST area C- one 10,000-gallon diesel UST, and two 15,000-gallon gasoline USTs. Ten soil samples and one groundwater sample collected. Results indicate groundwater is contaminated with DRO 9.22 mg/L. 70 cy is stockpiled on Everts property on Mail Trail Road. Samples from stockpile indicate DRO up to 2990 mg/kg. Recommend- gw monitoring summer 2009 including possible need to sample for lead scavengers and remediation plan for stockpile. Neal Everson
10/27/2009 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Received from ARES the groundwater sampling results from 2008. Wells MW-2 and MW-3 had DRO above cleanup levels. DEC requested additional data on groundwater gradient and direction. DEC also inquired if the stockpile was sampled in 2009. No lead scavengers sampling needed because the tanks are either post-lead in gasoline ban, or other fuel that does not contain lead. Tamara Cardona-Marek
8/1/2013 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Received the August 2013 Groundwater Monitoring Well Report. Between June 2008 and August 2013 five groundwater sampling events were performed on five wells MW-1 through MW-5. The observed contaminant levels appear to remain relatively level. All five wells contain detectable levels of DRO, however only MW-2 and MW-3 exceeded MCLs for DRO in several of the sampling events. MW-2 was slightly beneath the DRO MCL in the 2013 sampling event, but sampling frequency has not been enough to have confidence in decreasing trends. Benzene and GROs were detected only in MW-3 and never at levels exceeding MCLs. BTEX and GROs have not been detected in wells besides MW-3. Robert Burgess
2/3/2016 Update or Other Action Stockpile source area (ID 78640) removed from this Site and transferred to Everts Storage Yard (File 100.23.087, Hazard ID 1644) to reflect the actual 1993-1995 stockpile transfer to Everts Storage Yard. Shawn Tisdell
3/1/2016 Update or Other Action DEC requested continuation of groundwater investigation to demonstrate the contaminant plume is not migrating off-site and is steady state or decreasing in size. Response to the letter is requested by the RP within 30 days of receipt. Shawn Tisdell
3/31/2016 Leaking Underground Storage Tank Cleanup Initiated - Petroleum Administrative action addition for grant reporting purposes Evonne Reese

4/25/2018 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC staff reviewed 2014 through 2017 groundwater monitoring reports. DRO has continued to exceed CULs in all but the 2017 monitoring event for wells MW-2 and MW-3. Recommendations in the report for future cleanup action include conducting an additional groundwater monitoring event in 2018 and a well elevation survey. The DEC requested that the consultant evaluate if PAH and VOC sampling is necessary to demonstrate that current CULs are not being exceeded and to provide status of the contaminated soil stockpiled at 5472 Mail Trail Road. Shawn Tisdell
10/12/2018 Update or Other Action Groundwater sampling and site survey conducted, report to be submitted to the DEC during the winter of 2018/2019. Shawn Tisdell
11/2/2018 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Received revised 2017 Groundwater Monitoring Well Report. Results from the 8/2017 sampling event were all below cleanup-levels. DRO in MW-2 was 460 µg/L and in MW-3 was 440 µ/L. Shawn Tisdell
