Problems/Comments

Site Assessment prepared by Gilfilian Engineering and Environmental Testing, Inc., received February 12, 1996. Tanks were pulled in 1995 and excavated soil was transported off site (to McKinley Village) for storage / treatment. This site consisted of a convenience store and fuel station. The National Park Service originally operated it since the 1950s but upgraded the fuel tanks in the 1970s when they had two 12,000 gallon tanks installed - one for gas and one for diesel. There was also a 2000 gallon gas tank and two fuel islands associated with the site. All buildings and structures have been removed. The site was subsequently leased to ARA Denali Park Resorts who were responsible for tank closure in 1995. The tanks were removed and soil was excavated according to field screen readings. There were 9 soil samples submitted for lab analysis and one exceeded ADEC cleanup levels near the fill pipe location of the 12,000 gallon gas tank at 21 feet bgs. All other samples were below cleanup levels.

9/26/2007 Update or Other Action The excavated soil (75 cy from the diesel tank and 120 cy from the gas tank) were transported to an off site location (McKinley Village complex) owned by ARA. The soil was placed in treatment cells and remain there today. The soil sample results submitted by Lilly Capell from samples collected in 2003 indicated some contamination remaining in the stockpiles but it was not clear how or where the samples were collected. EMI contacted DEC and proposed a composite approach to sampling the DRO and GRO stockpiles - which was approved Current status is that EMI (Larry Helgeson) is in the Denali Park area and will inspect the stockpiles and develop a sample plan to sample them in the near future to determine their status. The file information indicates the stockpiles were located on top of the McKinley Village waste water absorption system and may have to be re-located if a new system is required. Jim Frechione
9/26/2007 Update or Other Action Lat/long updated using DEC GIS topo maps. Janice Wiegers
10/23/2007 Update or Other Action Lat/long updated using coordinates from National Park Service coordinates obtained from Jon Paynter. Janice Wiegers
1/4/2008 Update or Other Action Environmental Management Inc submitted a soil stockpile characterization report. There were 2 stockpiles (120 cy gasoline and 75 cy diesel) that had been located there since 1995. They were sampled using a composite methodology with 12 samples from the gas stockpile and 9 from the diesel were composited into individual lab samples for analysis. The results detected 8.8 mg/kg GRO and 59.2 mg/kg DRO in the respective stockpiles with BTEX all below cleanup levels. Jim Frechione
1/9/2008 Site Closure Approved McKinley Mercantile operated from the 1950s to 1990s. Underground tanks were removed and contaminated soil excavated. Soil remaining on site did not exceed cleanup levels and groundwater was not encountered in boreholes to 50 feet. Following confirmation that soil transported off site achieved cleanup levels, site closure was approved. Jim Frechione
