Problems/Comments
Two, 2,000 gallon UST were removed from this site in September 1994. The UST's had been used for both gasoline and diesel storage. Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination was encountered in the soil and groundwater beneath the UST's. Due to safety concerns, proximity to roads, and the nearby community of Teller, all of the contaminated and clean soil was returned to the excavation. The site is located on a narrow spit between Port Clarence, and Grantley Harbor. The soil consists of loose gravel and coarse beach sands. The area is subject to frequent storms and flooding, the surface soils are approximately 8' above sea level.
The closest drinking water source is over 1/2 mile away. The highest contaminant concentrations reported in soil samples from the excavation and test pits were: GRPH, 2.1 mg/kg, DRPH 8,200 mg/kg, Total BETX 0.21 mg/kg and Total lead was found at 2.8 mg/kg. Groundwater sampled from beneath the former USTs indicate a total petroleum hydrocarbon concentration of 3.20 mg/L. Total xylenes, benzene and ethylbenzene concentrations were below the Groundwater cleanup levels. The only samples containing contaminants above cleanup levels were taken from an area below the southern UST. Samples collected form the test pits did not exceed the cleanup criteria. NFA issued in 1995, three years of soil and groundwater monitoring at site required as part of NFA. Monitoring did not occur. In 2004 major storms deposited 10 additional feet of cobble over the top of the UST site making further sampling impracticable.
