Problems/Comments

Two 5,000 gallon gas USTs were removed from the site in 1998, but the associated piping was left in place. During the tanks removal in 1998, the excavations were backfilled with decommissioned building debris. On August 3, 2007, a site characterization, as well as removal of debris and piping was performed. The area of the former USTs was partially excavated to a depth of 4 feet bgs in efforts to remove debris. Confirmation soil samples from the depths of the excavation indicate the presence of contaminates, but below ADEC cleanup levels. The piping, which was located at 1 foot bgs, was removed. Confirmation soil samples collected from underneath the piping, at 1.5 feet bgs, indicate benzene contamination up to 0.0322 mg/kg. Groundwater was not encountered during all the excavation activities. An old abandoned drinking water well remains 100 to 200ft upgradient of the former USTS. Excavated piping remains on the concrete pad at site as of 5/21/09. This site also had a reportedly (separate) spill event in 1985 in which approximately 10,000 gallons of gas may have spilt due to broken fuel lines, but there is no evidence the spill actually occurred. Therefore this spill event, which is tracked under the file name Lake Louise Junction Cafe, Hazard ID 678, file # 2237.38.001, is non-qualifying.
