Problems/Comments

On May 7th, 1998, a non-regulated heating oil tank (tank #8) at the Shop was decommissioned. There is a public water utility line nearby and a drinking water well reportedly near the UST removal site. Contaminated soil was found on the west side of the UST at a depth of two feet below ground surface (BGS) and extended to the bottom of the excavation to remove the UST. An estimated volume of four cubic yards of contaminated soil was placed between liners on-site. The pit area measured 15 feet by nine feet (135squarefeet). Two analytical samples were collected from the pit, both associated with and directly below the pipe trenches at about six inches above the soil/groundwater interface. Groundwater was encountered at a depth of approximately five feet BGS. Inspection by NPS and DEC determined additional excavation was impracticable and the pit was backfilled with clean material. The tank appeared to be in good condition when removed with no sign of leaks.
