Problems/Comments

A 500-gallon aboveground storage (day) tank, located off the northeast corner of the generator building at the Nightmute school, had historic spills. There were two other day tanks and a tank farm also at this location. During a 2001 site assessment, stressed vegetation was noted downgradient of the generator day tank possibly from a 225-gallon spill in 1997. Soil samples collected about 30 and 60 feet downgradient of the generator bldg day tank at 1.5 ft. bgs and 1.0 ft. bgs. contained DRO at 239 mg/kg and 412 mg/kg, respectively. GRO, RRO, and BTEX were detected below cleanup levels. Currently, there is a drinking water well at the school that is 56 feet deep.

4/1/2013 Meeting or Teleconference Held Project manager (Bernhardt) spoke with Gary Hanson (LKSD Facility Manager) and James Mikesell (LKSD Regulatory Compliance Specialist) on 29 March about characterizing possible contamination that may remain at the subject site 15 years after its release. Project manager followed up with Jim Mikesell on 1 April to see what resources are available in Nightmute to help with remediation and site characterization and to discuss options for making progress after snow melts and the ground thaws. Richard Bernhardt

1/13/2014 Update or Other Action On this day, DEC received the Nightmute School Limited Environmental Site Characterization report, dated December 2013. Site characterization activities were performed at this site on October 16 through 18, 2013. Characterization efforts were focused on the eastern and southeastern sides of the school, where previous spills were documented, near day tanks, the decommissioned tank farm, and areas of piping. Numerous field screening samples and 17 soil samples for laboratory analysis (including a duplicate) were collected from between 8, 18, or 36 inches below ground surface (bgs) at this site. A drinking water sample was also collected during field activities. One soil sample, collected from 8 inches bgs, east of the school, and near an AST exhibited DRO at 1,320 mg/Kg, which exceeds the ADEC cleanup level of 250 mg/Kg (A sample collected from 18 bgs in this same location did not exhibit any analyte concentrations above ADEC cleanup criteria). None of the other analytes in any of the soil or water samples were detected at concentrations that exceeded the ADEC cleanup criteria. Joshua Barsis
