Problems/Comments

The Gulkana Airport was originally built during World War II by the U.S. Air Force. The FAA began providing communication and airway navigation support at the airport in 1941. The area operated as the Gulkana Prepositioning Area and Army Site from 1961 through 1966. During this time the U.S. Army used the site as a mobilization staging area, dispersal site and a tactical training area. The majority of the property at the Gulkana Airport was transferred to ADOT&PF in 1966. The contamination associated with this site is on Block 21, Lot 1A and it contains two source areas. One of the source areas is the former fuel distribution area and the former secondary containment area. The secondary containment area at one time contained two large above ground storage tanks (ASTs). According to the historical aerial photos, the two large ASTs, plus piping, 2 distribution buildings and fill area were apparent from 1966 to 1997. According to historical information, this site was used by the U.S. Army for fuel distribution. When the FAA owned the property before it was transferred to DOT, the property was Lots 10 and 11. According to the 2009 Oasis Site Characterization Report that was conducted on the Gulkana Airport, two areas of soil contamination was identified on Block 21, Lot 1A. The former fuel distribution area for the aboveground storage tanks is contaminated with GRO, benzene, and xylenes above Health-based cleanup levels. They estimate approximately 1,050 cubic yards of contaminated soil associated with this source area. Additionally, shallow perched groundwater is contaminated by DRO, GRO, and benzene above DEC Table C cleanup levels. The entire footprint of the former secondary containment area for the former tanks is contaminated with GRO above the HHRBC/maximum allowable concentration (1,400 mg/kg). Oasis estimate approximately 600 cubic yards of contaminated soil associated with this source area.
