Problems/Comments

During the removal of one 1,028-gallon non-regulated heating oil underground storage tank (UST) on August 27, 2009, diesel soil contamination was encountered at 5.5 feet below ground surface at the east sidewall of the excavation at approximately 2 feet from the building at concentrations of 910 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) and at 7.75 feet below ground surface beneath the east side of the UST at concentrations of 1,990 mg/kg. Approximately 20 cubic yards of contaminated soil was excavated from the UST excavation and transported to the City of Valdez Bailer Facility with diesel range organic (DRO) soil concentrations of 9,760 mg/kg and Benzo(a)pyrene soil concentrations of 1.01 mg/kg. When the tank was removed, floating product was observed in the excavation at approximately 6 feet below ground surface on the east side of the excavataion. An additional two feet of soil was excavated to approximatley 8 feet below ground surface along the east side of the tank excavation. The upper aquifer was measured in a groundwater sump adjacent to the site at approximately 13 feet below ground surface. Groundwater was not observed in the tank excavation.
