Problems/Comments

DRO was detected up to 7,000 mg/kg in samples from the tundra adjacent the gravel pad at this site and a CO2 survey indicated the presence of hydrocarbons in pad gravel in several areas. Phase II investigation scheduled for spring 2010 intends to delineate the extent of contamination in preparation for remediation.

4/13/2010 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Reviewed work plan for Put River 33-12-13. Boreholes will be advanced and soil samples collected at the reserve pit, west pit, flare pit, gravel pad, and surrounding tundra to evaluate the presence of hydrocarbon contamination. Additional investigation will occur in Summer 2010 consisting of visual inspection, shovel sheen testing, and surface soil sampling if necessary. Soil samples will be analyzed for DRO/RRO with a subset of samples also analyzed for GRO/BTEX and PAHs. Bill O'Connell

10/25/2010 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed Phase II Site Assessment Report and Corrective Action Plan. 28 boreholes were driven into the gravel pad and reserve pit berms and soil samples were collected from intervals ranging from 1-7 feet bgs. DRO was detected up to 5,800 mg/kg at 6 feet bgs in borehole GP-25 and GRO was detected up to 859 mg/kg at borehole GP-8 at 3-5 feet bgs. Samples from 12 boreholes contained DRO above 500 mg/kg. Impacted gravel was found at various locations and at various depths across the gravel pad, and also in the north and south reserve pit berms. DRO was also detected up to 2,330 mg/kg in the lake at the northwest corner of the pad, where samples from several boreholes indicated the presence of contamination. Samples from the flare pit contained DRO up to 13,900 mg/kg, indicating, along with other samples, that the top 1-3 feet of material in this area is impacted with hydrocarbons. Proposed corrective action at the site includes removal of the entire gravel pad, and reserve pit berms, excavating drilling waste and backfilling the reserve pit. Contaminated material will also be removed from the Lake near the northwest corner of the pad and from the former flare pit. Approximately 27,000 cy of clean gravel will be removed and used to backfill the reserve pit and other areas, with surplus material staged offsite for reuse. Approximately 300 cy of gravel with DRO less than 500 mg/kg will also be used as reserve pit back fill with approximately 7,300 cy of restricted use/contaminated gravel hauled to East Dock landfarm for treatment. If it is necessary to create stockpiles in order to manage material onsite, samples will be collected from the stockpiles to characterize the material prior to reuse. Bill O'Connell
4/25/2012 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed Put River 32-12-13 Corrective Action Report. The entire gravel pad was removed to below tundra grade and the impacted material was excavated from the reserve pit and flare pit. An apparently unused, bermed containment pit known as the West Pit was also present at the site. Approximately 15,932 cy of clean gravel was excavated from the gravel pad, and the reserve pit and West Pit berms. Approximately 1,764 CY of clean gravel was used onsite as backfill, and the remainder was transported to Dead Arm Pit for future reuse. Approximately 10,360 cy of contaminated and restricted use gravel and tundra were excavated and transported to East Dock landfarm for treatment. Additionally, unused drilling mud that contained concentrations of TCLP lead above the RCRA toxicity threshold was found on the gravel pad and containerized into three drums. The material was transported to the GPB Hazardous Waste Coordinator for disposal, along with two large, lead-acid batteries found at the site. Following excavation activities, confirmation soil samples were collected from areas where hydrocarbon contamination was identified during Phase II sampling including the gravel pad, flare pit, and surrounding tundra areas. DRO was detected up to 156 mg/kg. Excavated areas were backfilled with gravel and topped with organic overburden to facilitate rehabilitation of the site. Bill O'Connell
4/25/2012 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 78872 Historic diesel contamination. Bill O'Connell
5/25/2012 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) has completed a review of the environmental records associated with BPX Put River 33-12-13 located in the Greater Prudhoe Bay Area approximately 14 miles northwest of Deadhorse Alaska. Based on the information provided to date, it has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and this site will be closed.
