Problems/Comments
The airstrip was built in the late 1960s or early 1970s. ADOT&PF owned and operated the airstrip until the land was conveyed to the Nunakauiak Yupik Corporation in 2005. The former airport apron is located adjacent to the National Guard Armory which had two reported spills and the community is concerned about the potential contamination because the community is interested in building a new Head Start building at this property. DEC's Reuse and Redevelopment Program assisted the community with an application to EPA for a Targeted Brownfield Assessment (TBA), which was approved in November 2009. Final TBA report was completed in June 2011.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
11/29/2009 | Brownfields Award | EPA approved a Targeted Brownfield Assessment (TBA) for the former airport apron area in Toksook Bay. EPA TBA funds expended: $65,579. | Deborah Williams |
6/4/2010 | Site Added to Database | A new site has been added to the database. This site is listed for informational purposes only, because it is the subject of a Targeted Brownfield Assessment from EPA. The community requested the TBA because they are interested in redeveloping the property and had concerns about the site's location. An informational site listing does not imply or confirm that environmental contamination exists at the site. | Deborah Williams |
6/8/2010 | Site Visit | EPA and its contractor who is conducting the Targeted Brownfield Assessment visited this site in Toksook Bay on this date for a site reconnaissance to plan the sampling event that will occur later this field season. | Sonja Benson |
6/30/2011 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Review of the 2011 TBA reports (Phase I and assessment) indicate that no analytes were detected above ADEC cleanup levels and the headstart building could be utilized. | Lisa Griswold |
9/27/2021 | Update or Other Action | Staff assigned changed to "no longer assigned" as the site does not appear to have confirmed contamination. Site retains its "informational" status as it was originally addressed through EPA's Targeted Brownfield Assessment Program. For further information, please contact ADEC Brownfields staff. | Lisa Griswold |
