Problems/Comments

On June 25, 2010, during the removal of Tank #1, a 10,000-gallon dual-purpose (heating oil / emergency generator) underground storage tank containing diesel fuel, contaminated soil was found. A small spill also ocurred from one of the connecting pipes at the time of tank removal. Due to the need to continue the renovation project, the consultant contacted DEC for guidance on how to proceed with excavated contaminated soil. Based on initial soil sampling, the bottom of the excavation had contamination up to 14,300 parts per million (ppm) of diesel range organics (DRO). No additional excavation was possible due to the proximity to the building and the instability of the sidewalls due to the size of the excavation. Excavated soil was segregated and 80-200 yards of contaminated soil were taken to Organic Incineration Technology, Inc. (OIT) for off-site treatment. DEC recommended that a groundwater sample be collected underneath the source area prior to the expansion of the store in this area. the consultant installed two direct push wells within the source area and collected groundwater samples for DRO and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) analysis.
