Problems/Comments
Historic petroleum contamination was found on April 29, 2011 during excavation activities for construction of a research greenhouse on the west side of the University of Alaska Arctic Health Research Building, north of Yukon Drive. DEC has no record of a spill occuring in that location. Analyticals show that contamination is most likely from a diesel source. Soil was photoionization detector (PID) tested during excavation and soil over 2,000 parts per million (ppm) diesel range organics (DRO) will be transported to Organic Incineration Technology, Inc. (OIT) upon funding approval. Due to the position of the contamination in relation to Yukon drive, excavation to remove all of the contamination was not practicable. Method One calculator was used by the Prevention and Emergency Response Program (PERP) to determine the cleanup levels at this site.
