Problems/Comments

The former Gasoline Station Site contained a 2,050-gallon UST (28-B-1) used to supply unleaded gasoline to FAA vehicles. UST 28-B-1 was decommissioned in FY96. During decommissioning, the UST was identified 45 feet southeast of potable water well No. 2 (Building 605). Approximately ten cu. yds. of gasoline-impacted soil were excavated from beneath the fuel line (between the tank and the dispenser). aApproximately 50 gallons of sludge were removed and disposed of off site at the Alaska Pollution Controls in Palmer, Alaska. Soil excavated from beneath the fuel supply piping had a strong gasoline odor. The results of a FY95 RI showed that unleaded gasoline had leaked from threaded piping joints, contaminating subsurface soil and groundwater. DRO, GRO, and BTEX were detected in groundwater directly below the release at levels significantly above ADEC standards. DRO contamination may be due to upgradient sources. Results from a FY99 RI concluded that the soil is not contaminated, although groundwater does appear to be impacted by benzene and GRO, which were detected above ADEC cleanup standards. Benzene was the only exceedance in 2004 at 44 ug/l.

12/10/2015 Meeting or Teleconference Held DEC staff attended a meeting with FAA PM Raymore to discuss the current status and path forward at the FAA Cold Bay Station sites. Planned work includes an evaluation of remediation technologies for the contamination detected in soil and groundwater and an evaluation of all remaining FAA properties. It was also recommended by DEC that FAA send a representative to the next public meeting in Cold Bay. Monte Garroutte
2/4/2016 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) approved the Groundwater Sampling Report, Cold Bay Groundwater Sampling and Feasibility Study, Cold Bay, Alaska. This report summarizes the 2015 groundwater sampling activities which were conducted at the FAA Cold Bay sites. This included the investigation of the following six areas of concern (AOCs): 1. Building 101 – Former Living Quarters 2. Building 102 – Former Living Quarters 3. Building 104 – Former Living Quarters 4. Building 107 – Former Living Quarters 5. Building 207 – Former Water Treatment Plant 6. Building 208 – Former Gasoline Shed DRO exceeds the groundwater cleanup level in at least one well at each AOC. Free product is present in well MW-12H, which is in the Building 207 AOC. Recommendations for each AOC will be addressed in the upcoming feasibility study for the site. Monte Garroutte
5/19/2021 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other ADEC provides comment on the "Draft Groundwater Monitoring and Investigation Work Plan Revision 0" dated February, 2021. This work plan proposes to do groundwater monitoring at this AOC (as well as work at other AOCs). Jessica Hall
