Problems/Comments

Two piles of discarded batteries were discovered near Fure's Cabin on Naknek Lake in Katmai National Park. Both locations have a large number of batteries, aproximately the size of "D Cell" batteries, in various levels of decay. No vegetation is growing at either area. Location "A", east of the woodshed, is approximately 15 feet long by 18 inches wide. The depth of debris ranges from 6 to 12 inches. Location "B", northeast of the cabin, and approximately 10 feet long and up to 30 inches wide. The depth of debris is unknown.

6/20/2012 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Contaminated Sites Staff recieved a draft work plan for a removal action proposed for discarded batteries adn associated impacted soils in two areas adjacent to the cabin. There is lead, barium, cadmium and mercury above the ADEC cleanup level present in the soil at the site and the plan details this summer's work to remove the batteries, associated impacted soil, and collect analytical samples. Jonathan Schick
7/6/2012 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Contaminated Sites Staff approved a final work plan for removal of discarded batteries and associated impacted soils from two areas adjacent to the cabin. Melody Debenham
7/30/2012 Update or Other Action Project manager changed from Schick to Debenham Rebecca Bryan
4/8/2013 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved the final report documenting battery waste removal and soil assessment. The NPS consultant removed spent batteries and associated impacted soils from two swales near the cabin. Laboratory results show that cadmium and mercury remain above the applicable cleanup levels in the east swale and lead, cadmium, and mercury remain above the applicable cleanup levels in the north swale. Additional batteries and contaminated soil may be present at the northern portion of the north swale. Based on the results of the ecoscoping form, an ecological conceptual site model should be completed for this site. Melody Debenham
