Problems/Comments

During site characterization activities, contaminated soil was encountered beneath the Paint Shop drainage pipe. The drain pipe was not connected to the Anchorage Water and Waste Utility sanitary sewer system. The soil from the excavation was visually impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons and was containerized in three 55-gallon drums. The soil sample contained concentrations of diesel range organics (DRO), residual range organics (RRO), arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, and mercury above ADEC cleanup levels. Site also includes PERP spill no. 14239915002. Spill date = 5/30/14; substance = lubricant oil AW-32; quantity = ~20 gallons; description: lubricant oil was discovered to be missing from elevator mast cylinder - source of the release is assumed to be the cylinder seal located ~20 feet below ground surface. Elevator was removed from service until repairs could be completed.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
3/6/2012 Site Added to Database A new site has been added to the database Alyce Hughey
3/6/2012 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Initial ranking with ETM completed for source area id: 79267 name: Drain Pipe Alyce Hughey

6/25/2014 Spill Transferred from Prevention Preparedness and Response Program A leak in the elevator mast cylinder released an estimated 20 gallons of hydraulic fluid approximately 20' below ground surface. This has been entered as a new source area associated with the Paint Shop. Spill no. 14239915002 transferred by PERP staff Megan Kohler; spill date = 5/30/14; substance = lubricant oil AW-32; quantity = ~20 gallons; description: lubricant oil was discovered to be missing from elevator mast cylinder - source of the release is assumed to be the cylinder seal located ~20 feet below ground surface. Elevator was removed from service until repairs could be completed. Meghan Dooley
6/16/2015 Site Characterization Report Approved Reviewed the March 2015 report for the 2014 Semi-Annual Groundwater Monitoring. This site is one of three co-located sites and is known at Area of Concern (AOC)3 in the report. Wells (MW-2R and MW-6) from the another co-located site (AOC1) have been used to determine if this source is affecting groundwater. The two wells were sampled twice, once in June and once in December. Samples were analyzed for DRO and RRO. In the June 2014 sampling event, DRO was not detected. RRO was detected in MW-6 at 0.943 mg/L, but was below the groundwater cleanup level. In the December 2014 sampling event DRO was not detected. RRO was not detected but the lab's limit of quantitation exceeded the cleanup level, so the data could not be used. Lisa Krebs-Barsis
7/20/2015 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Approved of work plan to collect samples from AOC1 well MW-6 and AOC2 well MW-2. Samples will be analyzed for DRO and RRO. Lisa Krebs-Barsis
12/21/2015 Site Characterization Report Approved AOC 1 MW6 exceeded cleanup levels for DRO and RRO at 5.91 mg/L and 23.6 mg/L respectively and should be resampled. Lisa Krebs-Barsis
4/11/2016 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed December 2015 Semi-Annual Groundwater Monitoring Event Report for 4333 Bering Street. Site work included redeveloping Area of Concern 2 (AOC2)monitoring well MW-5, and conducting semi-annual groundwater monitoring. Gasoline Range Organics (GRO) were present in AOC2 monitoring wells MW-5 and MW-6 at up to 13.9 mg/L above the ADEC cleanup level of 2.2 mg/L. Benzene was also present in MW-5 and MW-6 at up to 1.22 mg/L and was detected in monitoring well MW-7 at concentrations below the ADEC cleanup level of 1.0 mg/L and Toluene was detected in MW-5 up to 2.02 mg/L above the ADEC cleanup level of 1.0 mg/L. 2/26/2018 Site Characterization Workplan Approved The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) has reviewed the “Workplan for Groundwater Monitoring, Bering Street Maintenance Facility, 4333 Bering Street Anchorage Alaska…”. The work plan details the methods to be followed for the 2018 groundwater monitoring event of wells MW-5, MW-6, and MW-7, for ADEC site numbers 2100.26.566, 2100.38.528 and 2100.26.246 (CCIC). The ADEC has no objections to the work plan. Chelsy Passmore
6/14/2018 Site Characterization Report Approved The ADEC Reviewed the "March 2018 Groundwater Monitoring Event, Bering Street Maintenance Facility..." report. This report encompasses three areas of concern (AOCs) are tracked separately on the database under file numbers 2100.26.246 (CC-IC), 2100.26.566 (active), and 2100.38.528 (this site). This site is described in the report as AOC3. During March 2018 two groundwater samples were collected from MW6 in AOC3. Samples contained RRO above ADEC Table C cleanup levels up to 3090 ug/L and detected DRO below ADEC cleanup levels up to 1090 ug/L. Chelsy Passmore
6/25/2018 Update or Other Action Letter sent to MOA requesting additional groundwater monitoring with a work plan submitted by March 1, 2019. Janice Wiegers
10/15/2020 Update or Other Action DEC sent letter to MOA asking about the work plan requested earlier. Janice Wiegers
11/29/2020 Update or Other Action DEC sent recent letter to new contact at MOA. Janice Wiegers
