Problems/Comments
The Former Munitions Storage Area is approximately 21 acres and is located on the northeastern shore of Shemya Island. The site is located at the base of a bluff approximately 200 feet high and is approximately 100 feet south of the shoreline. In 1986 an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team responded to a report of unexploded ordnance found in the vicinity of the site. The team found clusters of incendiary bombs, excavated the site, and transported over 1,500 live bombs to a burn site for detonation. The site now includes 29 cells or revetted areas where supplies were stored in WWII.
