Problems/Comments

While manually filling a day tank on the south side of the Z Annex building at the FAA Anchorage Air Route Traffic Control Center ZAN the operator was away from the tank and it overfilled. Subsequently the U.S. government shut down caused employees to be away from the facility and the fuel was not removed from secondary containment. It rained a significant amount during October 2013, and when FAA employees returned they found that the fuel had pressured out of secondary containment area and spilled onto the ground. The spill amount was estimated between 50-60 gallons. A subcontractor working on an adjacent tank removal project could not remove all of the contamination due to poor material causing cave in of the excavation; they were able to excavate to approximately 7 feet bgs. Remaining area of contaminated soil, estimated at 2 feet square, contains 752 mg/kg DRO.
