Problems/Comments

Drums and building debris remain from WWII and Atomic Energy Commission activities on the island. One acre on the south coast of the island is affected by debris. This U.S. Army Weather and Aircraft Warning Station was established in March 1944. Quonset huts and other buildings were erected and subsequently abandoned. The Island was used by the Atomic Energy Commission between 1969-1973 to monitor underground nuclear testing on nearby Amchitka Island. The site classified as No Further Action by US Army Corps of Engineers in 1991. In 1989 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife informed the Corps of barrel dumps remaining on the island. The site is located in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Last staff assigned was Halverson.

3/28/1996 Update or Other Action DEC received the final report, "1995 Site Investigation Semisopochnoi Island, Aleutian Islands, Alaska" prepared by Dames and Moore. The report documents field investigation work to identify FUDS program eligible contamination on the island. Work focussed on three areas of concern: a drum dump, a Quonset Hut Camp, and a potential ordnance and explosives contamination (no ordnance contamination had been reported, however, since nearby Kiska Island has ordnance contamination from WWII there was concern that this site may also). Mimimal petroleum contamination was found (~4 square foot area of suface soil sheen, staining around a 5 gallon grease container), along with dilapidated building remains and approximately 200 empty 55-gallon drums. No significant contamination was found nor was any sign of ordnance or explosives contamination. John Halverson
6/12/1996 Update or Other Action The Army Corps of Engineers submitted a final report on Cultural Resource Investigation at Kiska, Little Kiska, and Semisopochnoi, Aleutian Islands, Alaska. The report documents cultural resource work conducted concurrent with the remedial investigation work conducted by the Corps during 1995. John Halverson

The Corps of Engineers signed the decision document on September 29, 2005. Sampling results from the site met method 2 soil cleanup levels or were determined to be within background levels or represented very localized, deminimus volumes, of contamination. John Halverson
