Problems/Comments

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) radio range facility is collocated with the Communication Transmission Station (CTS) facility and is situated in wet tundra just outside of Nome. The twin 300’ towers were dropped into a lake and are partially submerged. The CTS building is standing and weathered, with badly chipping interior lead-based paint. Transformers, asbestos, and lead cable are scattered about the site. No liquid filled transformers were observed. Though no obvious visual or olfactory signs of petroleum contamination were observed, five former above-ground storage tank locations may be a potential source area.
