Problems/Comments

In July 2013 a release of diesel fuel was suspected due to vapors in the basement of a residence at 593 East 8th Avenue in North Pole. In July 2014 petroleum-contaminated groundwater was confirmed when it flooded the basement of the townhouse unit during a seasonal high water event. Site investigation activities by DEC staff indicate the likely source is a 500-gallon suspected former underground heating oil tank that appears to have been removed some time prior to the property transfer in May 2013. Conditions that lead to this conclusion include the position of the current tank compared to the adjoining townhouses as well as the soil characteristics and presence of back-fill in the suspected location of the former tank determined by numerous soil borings. Vapor intrusion mitigation measures implemented at the site include the use of an air filtration system on loan from DEC. It is possible that this release is related to a May 2006 unconfirmed report of vapors in the basement of another townhouse in the same complex during another seasonal high water event.
