Problems/Comments

The site is a former cannery on the west side of Chignik Lagoon. Parallel (Dago) creek is to the north of the cannery. An unnamed creek bisects the facility. Both creeks empty into the lagoon. A cannery was operated at the site from 1911 to the 1960s. From then until 1991 it was operated as a support facility for the local fishing fleet. The site is currently uninhabited and the only access of the site is by trespassers and the occasional visit by a caretaker. In 2014, releases were confirmed at two source areas, the "old" tank farm and the "new" tank farm. Benzene and diesel range organics (DRO) were detected in soil up to 97,700 mg/kg at the old tank farm and DRO was detected in soil up to 21,900 mg/kg at the new tank farm. Potentially there are multiple sources including two dumpsites ("old" and "new"), aboveground storage tank associated with facility buildings, drums, fuel piping systems, power houses, and a machine shop. 1/23/2017 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed the Wards Cove Packing - Chignik Lagoon Cannery Tank Farm Site Investigation and Remediation Report (TPECI - December 13, 2016). Landfarm baseline sampling at the Upper Landfarm, Lower Landfarm and Landfarm #3 found that surface soils were all below ADEC Method Two cleanup levels for hydrocarbon contaminants. Soil samples collected from excavated/stockpiled soils placed into the landfarms ULF and LLF found DRO and GRO concentrations well above ADEC cleanup levels. Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Total Xylene concentrations were also found to be above ADEC Method Two cleanup levels. As the excavation was advanced, the extents of the contamination were not encountered, and contaminant concentrations did not dissipate at greater depths. At a depth of approximately 20 feet below ground surface, continued excavation was no longer safe of feasible with the equipment available onsite. Soil samples collected from excavated/stockpiled soils placed into the landfarm LF3 found DRO and RRO concentrations well above ADEC cleanup levels. Groundwater samples collected from MW1, within the Old Tank Farm excavation area, exceeded the ADEC cleanup levels for DRO GRO, and BTEX. MW2 was located in the drainage ditch, approximately 125 feet (downgradient) from the New Power Plant. While no contaminants were found to exceed ADEC cleanup levels, elevated DRO concentrations were observed in the well. Darren Mulkey
