Problems/Comments

Building 6154 was built in 1957. This historical release was discovered in June 2012 during sampling for a Phase I Source Evaluation Report investigation of the Engineer Hill sites. While the 2012 sampling found diesel range organics, residual range organics, gasoline range organics, volatile organic compounds, and semi-volatile organic compounds in soil, all were below Method Two cleanup levels with the exception of benzo(a)pyrene, and presumed to be associated with releases from former storage tanks and distribution piping. The 2012 sampling also identified arsenic and chromium in soils above Method Two cleanup levels. The source of the metals release is unknown; additional information is needed to determine if the arsenic and chromium concentrations could be attributed to background levels. The site is adjacent to ST056, where groundwater has been been confirmed contaminated above DEC's Method Two cleanup levels with tetrachloroethylene (PCE).

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
3/4/2013 CERCLA PA DEC and EPA provided joint comments to the U.S. Air Force on the "Draft Source Evaluation Report for Multiple Sites at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska" dated January 2013. The report describes the investigation of 37 sites at Eielson that been reported or suspected of historical contaminant releases or activities that may have affected soil and water at the site. The investigation of SO070 as documented in the report includes a preliminary assessment, as well as sampling results. Sampling at the site identified benzo(a)pyrene, chromium and arsenic in soil in concentrations above DEC's Method Two cleanup levels. Melinda Brunner
6/12/2013 Update or Other Action DEC and EPA provided joint comments to the U.S. Air Force on the "Draft Final Source Evaluation Report for Multiple Sites at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska" dated April 2013. The report describes investigations at SO070. Melinda Brunner
6/21/2013 Update or Other Action The U.S. Air Force (USAF) provided a letter dated 21 June 2013 indicating that in response to DEC's and EPA's comments made on the "Draft Final Source Evaluation Report for Multiple Sites at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska" dated April 2013, the USAF would add a table to the final version of the document that described the SER recommendation for additional action at each site and the USAF selected path forward for each site. The letter indicates the USAF will pursue a remedial investigation/feasibility study at SO070. Melinda Brunner
