Problems/Comments

Type of contaminants: 1. Gamma radiation (levels exceeding 100 micro R/hr.); 2. Petroleum (300 gallons); 3. Fuel, lubricating oil, anti-freeze (25 gallons), transmission fluid. This site is an inactive uranium mine, worked on and off from the 1950’s until the 1970’s. It has industrial waste related to the mining activity such as fuel spills, as well as other contained liquids such as anti-freeze, lubricating oil, and transmission fluid. The biggest concern at this site, however, is the high levels of radiation emitted from waste rock piles, of which there are several. POL wastes and radioactive mine tailings. 184,000 tons of radioactive waste rock is the upper bound on the estimate. This rock has gamma radiation levels exceeding 100 microR/hr. The content of RA-226 in the waste rock is estimated to range from 43 to 69x10*12 picocuries. Estimate 300 gallons of petroleum and 25 gallons of lubricating oil, anti-freeze, and transmission fluid. Inactive uranium mine site, worked on and off from the 1950s to the 1970s. It has industrial waste related to the mining activities such as fuel spills, as well as other contained liquids such as anti-freeze, lubricating oil and transmission fluid. Radiation was discovered at the site in 1955, which led to mining development of the uranium. The report assessing the radiation and petroleum contamination of the site was received by DEC December 1, 1998. Site is located in Tongass National Forest. Administered but not owned by U.S. Forest Service. RP not yet determined. Former Reckey # listed as 1998130933501. 8 miles north of the south end of Prince of Wales Island, and 1.5 miles WNW from the head of the West Arm of Kendrick Bay. Point of contact is Elizabeth Walatka, 586-8723. Although source of current latitude and longitude are unknown, they appear to be in the general vicinity of Bokan Mountain. Last staff assigned was Janes. EPA ID AK0001897586; EPA site name USDA FS Tongass NF: Bokan Mountain Mine AKA Ross Adams Mine.
