Problems/Comments

A heating oil tank located inside a small outbuilding released diesel fuel into the buillding, which then soaked through the wooden floor and sidewalls into the surrounding soil. An unknown quantity of diesel fuel was lost. Preliminary reports suggest that the quantiity may be extensive. Additional investigation is required to delineate the extent of contamination in both soil and groundwater. The upland areas are covered with debris in the form of oyster farming equipment, boating gear, and household items. The bay is strung with buoys holding oyster nets, but they did not appear to have been tended for some time. Excerpt from 15 Aug 2005 site visit: A small creek flowed towards the bay to the left of the cabin and outbuildings. Piping laid aboveground leading to the cabin and down to the oyster prep area were obviously used for drinking water. Footbridges passed over the creek in three places and stirred up mud each time one was used. Other than that, there was no obvious impact to the stream. The overall problems at this location are surface debris and limited fuel contamination. Past investigation into the extent of the diesel release shows that levels exceed our most stringent cleanup levels, but the extent of the release is minor and limited to the area around the generator shed. Given the small extent of contamination in relation to the overall site condition, the diesel release is only a minimal issue. The property is used for mariculture purposes and both a small creek and Prince William Sound are in close proximity. The land is owned by the USDA and AK Fish & Game issues mariculture permits. The lease agreement requires the lessee to return the site to original condition upon vacation of the lease. Latitude and longitude received from Molly Grannon, U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Glacier Ranger District, Girdwood, 754-2326, 12/19/01. Quality unknown but appears to be accurate. Site business name spelled differently than the locale. Site located on point of land between two small unnamed bays west of Fairmount Bay. All correspondence for this site should include the Forest Service, Fish & Game, and DEC.
