Problems/Comments

On May, 12, 2002 it was estimated that 500 to 1,000 gallons of number 1 arctic grade heating oil spilled from a 25,000 gallon tank leaking pipe fitting. This is a crude estimate due to lack of a fuel usage accounting. PERP response, on May 14, 2002, recovered 30 - 50 gallons of free product. It was understood that AVEC was planning on replacing and upgrading the tank farm. As part of the renovation, the contaminated soils would be removed and remediated. With this in mind, PERP did not pursue an exhaustive cleanup effort. A recent communication to AVEC on 3/11/09 indicates the proposed tank farm upgrade did not occur due to lack of funding. The fuel migrated approximately 100 yards along a slough into the woods. There were impacts to vegetation along the banks of the slough, but contamination is not expected to have penetrated more than a few inches into the ground because of the water level. Near the point of the release, the gravel pad showed evidence of surface staining, perhaps from historical spills and leaks. It is assumed that a great deal of contaminated soil remains on site. It is reported that the town's drinking water well is located about two miles from the spill.
