Problems/Comments

Housing Building 101 had an associated 1,000-gal heating oil UST (UST 56-C-2) on the northwest side of the building. The UST was decommissioned on 6/25/97, and approximately 20 cu.yds of fuel-affected soil were removed and stockpiled on site. According to FAA, the stockpiled soils were placed in supersaks and sent to TPS Techonologies in Seattle, WA for treatment. A FY97 release investigation concluded that soil contamination is restricted to the immediate area beneath the former tank. The estimated volume of in-situ contaminated soil is 15 - 31 cu. yds. It was recommended that the contaminated soil be excavated and that surface and near surface soils be used as backfill. Contamination in groundwater is below cleanup levels and is expected to attenuate over time. Future activities include site characterization in FY04, followed by RAP in FY05, RAC in FY06, and site closure in FY07.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
8/11/1997 Update or Other Action The UST 56-C-002 at FAA Housing Building 101 was removed August 1997. Approximately 15 cubic yards of fuel-affected soil was excavated to remove the tank and an additional five cubic yards were removed in an effort to remove the bulk of the gross contamination without compromising the integrity of the foundation and surrounding concrete driveway. Soils at the limit of the excavation were notably contaminated. Contamination was most prevalent near the groundwater interface. Lab results showed DRO up to 6400 mg/kg Debra Caillouet
9/1/1997 Update or Other Action A release investigation occurred in September 1997 and the results were reported in the Final Release Investgation Report, Federal Aviation Administration Yakutat Station, January 8, 1998. During the drilling of the soil borings, it became apparent that the area of subsurface soil contamination exteneded further to the south than expected, and appeared to be elongated in a direction approximately perpendicular to the expected groundwater gradient. Four additonal sol borings were advanced to investigate this discrepancy. Based on site utility plans, fill material along sewer lines that extend south from the building appear to have acted as a preferential pathway for contaminant migration. Debra Caillouet
