Problems/Comments

Possible diesel contaminated soil in the northern corner of the gravel pad to be investigated. Possible contamination in reserve pit and flare pit to be investigated. Prudhoe Bay Unit.

6/13/2006 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Possible diesel contamination in Northern corner of pad. No sheen or off site migration noted. Workplan states that 22 boreholes will be drilled on the pad with a geoprobe and samples will be analyzed for DRO/RRO with 20% of samples also analyzed for GRO/BTEX. Bill O'Connell
10/4/2007 Site Characterization Report Approved Phase II Report and Corrective Action Plan received. QA/QC data review conducted. 22 boreholes drilled in gravel pad. DRO up to 3,190 mg/kg was found in soil borings along the eastern edge of the pad, however most of the pad is unimpacted by hydrocarbons. The CAP calls for excavation and segregation of gravel from the gravel pad. Contaminated gravel will be transported to East Dock for landfarming, restricted use gravel will be transported to East Dock and stockpiled for potential reuse at approved locations. Bill O'Connell

3/25/2009 Final Cleanup Report Reviewed Reviewed Abel State #1 Corrective Action Site Closure Report. The entire gravel pad was removed, the well was capped, and the reserve pit excavated then backfilled. Approximately 9,693 cubic yards of clean gravel from the pad and reserve pit berms were transported to Santa Fe Pad and North Prudhoe Bay State #1 for use as reserve pit backfill. The remainder of clean gravel and some conditional use gravel was used to backfill the onsite reserve pit. Approximately 648 cubic yards of restricted use (DRO > 500 mg/kg < 2,000 mg/kg) and contaminated (DRO > 2,000 mg/kg) gravel were removed and transported to East Dock Land Farm for treatment. Confirmation samples contaiend DRO up to 250 mg/kg. Bill O'Connell
6/1/2009 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) has completed a review of the environmental records associated with BPX Abel State 1 located near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Based on the information provided to date, the ADEC has determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment, and this site will be closed.
