Problems/Comments

The shed was used for flammable liquid storage, some leaking containers were found in 1988. One 55-gallon drum of heavy oils, one of light oil and solvent, and one drum of PCB greater than 500 mg/kg were shipped off site. The soil around the shed was sampled and analyzed for VOCs, PAHs and PCBs, BTEX and the petroleum hydrocarbon ranges. The only detections were DRO up to 7320 mg/Kg and GRO up to 236 mg/Kg. The excavation at SS001 was to native soil with 30 cubic yards being shipped offsite for thermal treatment and 230 cubic yards shipped offsite for disposal; another 60 cubic yards were used as backfill at the Bullen Point Landfill. Confirmation sampling indicated that some petroleum contamination exists next to, the then operational, Short Range Radar Station that could not be safely excavated. With the exception of the soil adjacent to the SRRS the cleanup goals were met with a 95% UCL of 1153 mg/kg DRO. The cleanup of SS001 was determined complete in 2008,but subsequent contamination was identified in 2014 as part of further assessment, and the site was re-opened. 8/1/2008 Update or Other Action The Clean Sweep Remedial Action Report was approved. POL contamination extended southeast from the shed. POL contamination was pervasive down to native soils (approximately 2.5-3.5’ bgs). Approximately 320 cy of soil over an area of 2,587 sf was excavated. An approximate volume of 30 cy of soil with DRO concentrations greater than 12,500 mg/Kg was bagged and shipped offsite for thermal treatment and disposal. An approximate volume of 230 cy of soil with DRO/RRO concentrations above 2,000 mg/Kg was bagged and shipped offsite for disposal. Approximately 60 cy of soil was used as cover material in the Bullen Point landfill (40 cy from excavation and 20 cy following land spreading). The site was backfilled with clean gravel and graded to fit the contours of the area. 2460 DRO 639 RRO MI confirmation sample of the tundra floor of the excavation. 3540 DRO 1550 RRO MI confirmation sample of the gravel and sand walls of the excavation. 1080 DRO 728 RRO Duplicate MI confirmation sample of the gravel and sand walls of the excavation. 1110 DRO 895 RRO Triplicate MI confirmation sample of the gravel and sand walls of the excavation.
