Problems/Comments

The site is a former barrel dump located approximately 5 road miles east of the KSAS on Lake Camp Road. The site is not on Air Force owned land but on a gravel pit owned by Paug-Vik Incorporated. Numerous 55 gallon drums were located throughout the site with Air Force markings on them. Two separate areas have been identified within the DA031 site designation: DA031-DR1 and DA031-DR2. Approximately 25 drums were found at DA031-DR1 some of which still contained liquid asphalt material. One drum had leaked and samples were collected from beneath the release. The samples returned results above the cleanup levels near the surface, but results were below cleanup levels at 18-24" below ground surface. Buried debris was located with a magnetic survey on the eastern and southern portion of the site. At DA031-DR2 several rusted and crushed drums were found on the side of the gravel pit. When soil samples were collected in 2006, DRO and RRO were detected in all samples below cleanup levels. Two boreholes were installed in 2009; no cleanup level exceedances in the boreholes, but iron was detected above cleanup levels in the groundwater at MW-04. The Air Force believes the exceedance of iron may be due to natural occurrences of iron at the site, and is not affecting public or private drinking water wells. The drums at DR2 are unsightly, but do not appear to have impacted soils or groundwater in this area. During a 2014 removal action, twenty-five drums containing asphalt/tar and eight drums containing waste oil were removed from DA031-DR1 and were shipped offsite for disposal, along with twelve drums containing asphalt/soil; this amounted to a total of 45 drums removed from DR1. Eighty-four cubic yards of POL-contaminated soil were excavated after the drums were removed. Eleven confirmation samples were collected from the floor and sidewalls of the excavation. All results were below cleanup levels, and the excavated area was backfilled with clean soil.
