Problems/Comments

In 2001, a site reconnaissance effort identified petroleum contamination above ADEC cleanup levels in soil at the site of the Kiana Elementary School's former tank farm. Eight of the original nine above ground storage tanks remain in place, but are no longer in use. Several drums of unknown contents were also present on the westernmost wood tank platform during 9/26/2001 site visit. Access to the source area is unrestricted.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
1/31/2002 Update or Other Action The elementary school tank farm is currently out of service. Eight of the original nine tanks remain in place, though they are no longer connected to the former fuel distribution pipeline. Each tank sits on a timber blocking and cribbing foundation, in a series of platforms that form steps downhill to the southeast. These tanks were formerly filled via pipeline from the Kobuk River. The pipeline header is located directly downhill from the elementary school tank farm. Staining was observed on some of the wood tank platforms. Several drums of unknown contents were present on the westernmost platform. One soil sample was collected adjacent to the southeast corner of the tank farm beneath a tank valve that contained 19,600 mg/kg DRO, 782 mg/kg GRO, 3.52 mg/kg ethylbenzene, and 10.83 mg/kg total xylenes. One soil sample was collected at the northwest end of the tank farm beneath a tank valve contained 66,000 mg/kg DRO, 795 mg/kg GRO, 0.220 mg/kg toluene, 0.255 mg/kg ethylbenzene, and 10.83 mg/kg total xylenes. According to S&W this area is in a low-traffic area, but access to these tanks is unrestricted. This tank farm had no containment dike or liner which suggests a potential for off-site migration of leaks or spills. Deborah Williams
