Problems/Comments

The site consists of surface soil stains resulting from releases of small quantities of diesel and lube oil from discarded drums and a discarded fuel storage tank. DRO and RRO were found in surface soil above ingestion and inhalation cleanup levels. The maximum concentrations detected were RRO to 67,100 mg/kg and DRO to 47,900 mg/kg beneath the discarded tank. The site is located northeast of upper camp on hillside with an extremely steep gradient which allowed the drums to roll approximately 1/2 mile downhill. The tank and drums with contents were removed with the aid of a helecopter during the 2007 RI. The empty drums were removed during the 2009 remedial action. ADEC made the determination that soil stains would not be removed due to the remoteness of the site, the lack of receptors, the small quantities released (estimated 2 cubic yards of contaminated soil), and the potential risk to the site workers tasked with removal of the soil. The contents of the drums with product were sampled, and compared to the used oil burning specification. One drum was overpacked and shipped off site due to the presence of halogenated hydrocarbons, the contents of the remaining drums were burned in a Smart ash cyclonic barrel burner. The cleaned drums were placed in the onsite landfill for disposal.
