Problems/Comments

Evidence of leaks, spills, saturated soils, ripped lining with drainage towards surface drinking water source. Two diesel spills: one 2000 gallons in 10/83 and one 3000 gallon in winter 1988 have threatened drinking water source, but 7/88 sample showed no contamination. Contaminated snow/soil moved to honey bucket lagoon in 1988. Low level toluene found at tap 10/90. Area estimated at 127,000 square feet. Contaminated snow moved to honey/bucket lagoon. 10/18/83 2000 gallon diesel spill cleaned up. 4/11/88 400 gallon diesel spill. On 4/25/88 a 10,000 gallon diesel spill (on 2 acres) occurred near Imagruaq (Ikmakrak) Lake (drinking water source). Some cleanup documented. See also file 390.38.002.

9/22/2006 Cleanup Level(s) Approved 8/9/05 - Larry Johnson met with representatives from NSB, ADEC Solid Waste, PERP, and ASCG. On a per site basis, ADEC agreed to allow characterized soil stockpiled in village to be used as landfill cover. Soil cannot exceed 12,500 mg/kg DRO. In areas that soils exceed ADEC levels, the borough will continue remediation. Shannon Oelkers
11/30/2006 Cleanup Assumed by ADEC ADEC letter sent to Marvin Olsen, NSB, concerning the Old Tank Farm and its "strong fuel odor near the transfer station where the liner was exposed and tattered." It also mentioned the sheen in the northwest corner of the tank farm and stated that analytical samples showed the presence of petroleum contamination above cleanup levels. Mr. Olsen/NSB was requested to provide an update of the contamination remaining at the site as well as a remediation plan by January 31, 2007. Shannon Oelkers
7/26/2007 Meeting or Teleconference Held ADEC staff Oelkers and O'Connell met with the NSB and their consultant to review open status village files and to propose responses to the ADEC's request for further information and characterization at this site. Bill O'Connell
9/24/2007 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Bill O'Connell
10/24/2007 Meeting or Teleconference Held Meeting today with NSB and their consultant. The ASTs are still in place at this facility, though no longer in use. Removal of the ASTs will be required before additional characterization is conducted. Bill O'Connell
5/6/2008 Update or Other Action Meeting with NSB and their consultant and submittal of Contaminated Site Review, Data QA/QC conducted. Atqasuk Old Tank Farm. DRO was detected up to 10,900 mg/kg in soil and up to 5.89 mg/L in surface water. Benzene also found in surface water at 0.00135 mg/L. Additional action at this site will occur when the tanks have been removed. Bill O'Connell
7/12/2010 Site Characterization Workplan Approved The ASTs were removed from this site late in 2008 allowing for further investigation to be conducted. The 2010 investigation will consist of surface water sampling from ponds near the former tank farm and excavating and sampling up to 13 test pits inside and outside of the tank farm. Soil samples will be analyzed for DRO, GRO, RRO, BTEX, and up to two samples will be analyzed for PAHs. Water samples will be analyzed for DRO, RRO, BTEX, and PAHs. Bill O'Connell
12/22/2010 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed Soil and Water Sampling Report for Old Atqasuk Tank Farm. 2010 sampling included the collection of 6 surface water samples from tundra ponds around the former tank farm and the excavation and collection of 22 soil samples from 13 test pits at the site. Of the 6 surface water samples, the sample and duplicate from location SW-2 contained benzene concentrations that exceed AWQS for TAH. DRO was detected in 3 of the 6 sample locations ranging from 1.26 mg/L at SW4 to 4.07 mg/L at SW3. Soil samples collected from test pits contained contaminants above ADEC cleanup levels in all but two of the test pits, TP6 and TP13. GRO concentrations ranged from 142 mg/kg to 313 mg/kg, DRO from 239 mg/kg to 5,960 mg/kg, and benzene from 0.0395 mg/kg to 3.56 mg/kg. The PAHs 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene were also detected in the one sample analyzed for PAHs. GRO and BTEX data is considered screening level data only as samples were not field preserved with methanol. Bill O'Connell
