Problems/Comments

Rapids Camp was established as a recreational facility for troops stationed at the King Salmon Air Station (AS); waste oils, fuels and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were used and stored at the site. The King Salmon AS has been divided into seven Groundwater Zones for the purpose of site management. Rapids Camp is also referred to as Groundwater Zone 6 (OT032). Rapids Camp AS Camp Generator Pad (SS004) is a former generator pad within Rapids Camp/Zone 6 (OT032) used by the Air Force between 1952 and 1977. Fuel contamination is present in soils and down to 30 feet below ground surface (bgs). The generator pad also encompasses the area known as Rapids Camp Septic (2569.38.020.04 - King Salmon AS Rapids Camp Septic (WP002 Septic Tanks/ST001), Hazard ID: 706). Groundwater monitoring wells were installed and monitored. A ROD for all of Rapids Camp/Zone 6 was signed in June of 2000. The selected remedy includes land use restriction institutional controls (ICs) and continued groundwater monitoring, with no further remedial action planned. ICs include no excavation of soils deeper than 5-feet bgs within the boundary of the former generator pad (SS004) or the former septic tanks (ST001) and no installation of drinking water wells within 100 feet of the boundary of the generator pad. Zone-wide annual groundwater monitoring and base-wide Long Term Monitoring (LTM) of ICs were established. For additional information on groundwater monitoring and LTM at Rapids Camp including Generator Pad SS004 see CS database entry: 2569.38.020 - King Salmon AS OT032 GW Zone 6, Hazard ID (ID): 2633.

Install monitoring well system and soil sampling should be done with contaminated soil removed. Site#2 removal of all drums is recommended along with previous suggestions for monitoring/sampling. Site#3 soil sampling of stained area is suggested as well as disposal/removal. Former Staff
6/15/1990 Update or Other Action Reconnaissance electromagnetic survey was conducted to search for buried drums, tanks, or other debris potentially buried on site, and to assist in choosing optimal drilling sites for soil borings and soil gas sample locations. The results of the soil gas survey were used to define areas of greatest potential environmental impact. Former Staff
