The Municipality of Anchorage (MOA), an I/M Area, extends from Eklutna to Girdwood. Residents within, and commuters to, the MOA are required to obtain I/M certificates for their vehicles.

As defined in 18 AAC 52.990, Definitions, (11) "commute" means to travel between a motorist's residence and an I/M area, a nonattainment area, or a maintenance area for purposes of work or school.

As defined in 18 AAC 52.990, Definitions, (7) "certificate of inspection" and "certificate" mean the windshield sticker affixed to the lower left corner of the front windshield for a vehicle that has passed an I/M test. The sticker must have been affixed by the certified mechanic who inspected the vehicle.

Following are commonly asked questions about the MOA Commuter I/M program:

I have more than one vehicle, do I need to get them all I/M certified?
No. Only vehicles that you plan to use for your commute need to have an I/M certificate.

I am in a car pool and drive to work only once a week, does my vehicle need an I/M?
Yes. You need to have an I/M certificate on your vehicle whenever you drive into the Municipality of Anchorage to go to work or school.

Does my vehicle need an I/M if I am only going to Anchorage to shop?
No. Only commuters who work or go to school within the Municipality of Anchorage need to get an I/M for their vehicle.

I do not live in within the Municipality of Anchorage. Does my vehicle need an I/M?
Only if you drive a vehicle into the MOA to go to work or school.

I drive into Anchorage once a week to go to the airport where I fly to the North Slope. Does my vehicle need an I/M?
Yes. North Slope workers are considered to report to work when they check in at the airport. Therefore, their commute vehicles must get an I/M.
