Problems/Comments
On 10/15/90, ADEC was informed that a diesel spill from the fuel tank of a piece of heavy equipment contaminated approximately 400 pounds of soil at the Hughes airport. All contaminated gravels were removed promptly, ADEC approved plans for landfarming of the contaminated soils. No further treatment of the soil was reported to the ADEC. In 2005, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) provided additional information that identified the location of the area formerly leased by Central Alaska Gold Company at the Hughes Airport. The site is approximately ¼ mile from the village of Hughes and down gradient from the village’s drinking water source. In 2006, ADEC staff visited Hughes in response to extreme flooding of the Koyukuk River and saw no evidence of a soil stockpile and it appeared the subject soil was either graded into the landing strip or washed away during the flood. Site transferred from PERP. Need to affirm that land is owned by state. (rpltr) Last staff assigned was Basketfield.

10/25/1990 | Cleanup Plan Approved | (Old R:Base Action Code = RAPR - Remedial Action Plan Review (CS)). Central Alaska Gold Company proposed landfarming the contaminated gravel after it is placed on a lined and bermed containment area. Landfarming to take place field season 1991. 8/19/1991 | Site Added to Database | Diesel spill. | Former Staff |
3/3/1992 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = RPL2 - Site Information Request Letter). ADEC sent PRP-CS Database Notification letter to PRP requesting update and additional environmental information concerning the contaminated site. As of "complete date", response not received and copy of letter not in file. | Jeff Peterson |
3/8/1994 | Site Ranked Using the AHRM | Attempted - insufficient data to provide score. | Former Staff |
8/16/1996 | Site Ranked Using the AHRM | Ranked by Shannon and Wilson. Insufficient data to generate a AHRM score. NOTES: A site visit or communication with someone familiar with the area is required to assign a value for site access, GW and surface water use, surface water environments, and observed impacts. Communication with the responsible party is required to determine the current status of the contaminated gravel. Sampling may be required to confirm remediation. | S&W |
5/11/2000 | Update or Other Action | Hard file and database review conducted by Silfven. Central Alaska Gold Company and affiliate companies listed on 1990 letterhead in file are unlisted currently in Fairbanks. Recommend site visit by Laura Noland. | S&W |
5/17/2000 | Site Ranked Using the AHRM | Site ranking determined by Silfven. Insufficient data to generate a AHRM score. A site visit or communication with someone familiar with the area is required to assign a value for site groundwater and surface water use and surface water environments. | S&W |
8/12/2005 | Update or Other Action | Received map from ADOT&PF detailing lot location along Hughes Airport landing strip. | Kim DeRuyter |
8/17/2006 | Record of Decision | Shannon Oelkers | |
8/18/2006 | Site Closure Approved | The site is a commercial/industrial facility located at the Hughes Airport. It was used for storage and maintenance of equipment by the Central Alaska Gold Company but is currently vacant. It is expected to be used for commercial/industrial airport purposes in the future. The removal of contaminated soil and subsequent stockpiling of the contaminated soil at the Hughes Airport site has removed the source(s) of contamination and the majority of soil impacted from the small diesel spill. Based on the information provided to date, ADEC has determined that the amount of contamination was minor in extent and was removed to the extent practicable. As a result, site closure is approved for this property. | Shannon Oelkers |
