Problems/Comments

Mr. Layman, the property owner of Eagle Trading Company removed a 1000 gallon underground storage tank from this site in 1993. No soil samples were taken during excavation of the tank. In 1996, Mr. Layman contracted Dames & Moore to evaluate possible soil contamination associated with the former UST. Dames and Moore re-excavated the area and collected one sample at about 11' below ground surface, beneath the approximate location of the fill pipe of the former tank. Soil from this location contained 2,610 mg/kg GRO, 15.2 mg/kg benzene, 278 mg/kg toluene, 85.9 mg/kg ethylbenzene, and 552 mg/kg total xylenes. The report suggests excavation of the contaminated soil and landfarming near Eagle to avoid the cost of transportation to OIT. According to the file, the UST had been used to sell commercial fuel and was therefore a regulated tank. After removal from the ground the tank was converted to an AST for commercial fuel sales. Photos in the site file indicate that the site is probably less than 100' from the Yukon River.
