Problems/Comments

Tanana Gas Company had a 25,000 underground storage tank (UST) used for storing gasoline removed in 1997 during a tank upgrade. The tank had been installed in 1977. The tank and associated piping were removed, along with 50 cubic yards of contaminated soil. During excavation two buried oil drums were discovered, and were removed. Confirmation samples from the limits of excavation were below ADEC cleanup levels for GRO and BTEX. The 50 cy of contaminated soil was reportedly added to a city stockpile in Tanana in 1998, which was to be remediated in 1999 along with soils from the Indian Health Services property. This remediation did not occur, however I.H.S. reports that the contaminated soil will be remediated in 2007 as part of a pilot test for their soils remediation project.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
11/17/1997 Leaking Underground Storage Tank Release Confirmed - Petroleum LUST Site created in CSP for source area ID 77711 Soil was contaminated in fill pipe area. 92 cy of soil excavated, 42 cy determined with PID to be clean and used as back fill. Analytical results from the bottom of excavation were below ADEC cleanup levels. Former Staff
11/17/1997 Leaking Underground Storage Tank Cleanup Initiated - Petroleum 25,000 gallon tank and piping removed. 50 cy of soil stockpiled with IHS/USPHS Hospital stockpile. All analytical samples from stockpile were below 100 mg/kg GRO and non-detect for benzene. Consultant noted that stockpiled dirt seemed 'dirtier' than analyticals showed. Former Staff
11/17/1997 Site Added to Database Former Staff
2/15/2007 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed file, and 1997 report. Updated database to reflect administrative file. The site is 75 feet from the Yukon River. Depth to groundwater in Tanana is 25-30 ft bgs. Shannon Oelkers
2/15/2007 Update or Other Action Changed name from "Tozitna Limited Native Corporation" to "Tanana Gas Company" to reflect adminsitrative file. Tozitna Limited Native Corporation is the owner of the removed tank, not the file name. Shannon Oelkers
2/16/2007 Update or Other Action Fate of 50 cy of soil difficult to determine. Phone conversation between ADEC Staff Williams and Sheryl with Tanana Gas Company identified that the soil has been mixed in with the USPHS stockpile and is indistinguishable. The USPHS stockpile has not been sampled since 1997. Shannon Oelkers
2/23/2007 Site Closure Approved The removal of the tank and contaminated soil at the Tanana Gas Company site served to remove the source(s) of contamination. Although the fate of the excavated soil has not been determined, soil samples confirm there is no contamination remaining above established cleanup levels. Based on the information provided to date, ADEC has determined no further cleanup action is required at this site and it is approved for closure status. Shannon Oelkers
2/26/2007 Update or Other Action Fate of stockpiled soil clarified by Paul Geissert with Indian Health Services. City of Tanana has large stockpile of soil (over 50 cy) that is on a liner, but is unfenced. The contaminated soils from the Tanana Gas Company excavation are probably part of this stockpile. The I.H.S. and USPHS stockpiles are fenced and lined, and not mixed with the City's soils. I.H.S. plans to use the City stockpile in 2007 as part of a pilot test of their soils remediation unit.
