Problems/Comments
Inside Building 300 was a concrete sump with a dirt floor, essentially a dry well, which was used to dispose of various products. A sample collected in 1992 and documented in the Environmental Compliance and Investigation Report, dated 1992, showed elevated levels of total petroleum hydrocarbons. In the Site Cleanup and Investigation Report, dated 1996, field activities are described concerning the sump including the removal of an unspecified volume of soil (less than one drum) and the filling of the sump with concrete. Samples for volatile organic compounds and semi-volatile organic compounds were collected prior to filling with concrete, and no elevated level of any analyte was detected. It is unknown if there are elevated concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons or metals in the soil below the sump; however the sump has been filled with concrete and the area around it is a concrete pad covered with a building which will prevent the infiltration of water from the surface and the migration of contamination. As the contamination is not currently accessible to any potential receptors, the department determines that no further remedial action is planned for the Building 300 Sump. If, in the future, the concrete floor is removed and the soil below and around the sump is accessible, the area should be characterized and any contamination managed in accordance with department regulations and guidance, as required by 18 Alaska Administrative Code (AAC) 75.325(i).
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
7/15/1991 | Site Added to Database | A new site has been added to the database (Date adjusted from 4/9/2009 for report/query consistency. (Reese)) | Mitzi Read |
7/15/1991 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = SA1 - Phase I Site Assessment (General)). Building 300 Floor drain and drum storage area on SE corner of building, and north and west sides of building show contamination. PAHs, heavy metals, and DRPH found at elevated levels. USTs are located at the NE and SE corners of the building. | Don Gibler |
7/15/1992 | Preliminary Assessment Approved | Phase I Site Assessment (General)). Soil samples collected next to incinerator concrete pad show dioxin and congeners, elevated levels of copper, lead and zinc. | Don Gibler |
10/9/1992 | Interim Removal Action Approved | (Old R:Base Action Code = SA1R - Phase I SA Review (CS/LUST)). Building 300 Interim action required of putting removable cap on floor drain. The use of this drum storage area has been discontinued. Asked that R.I. and C.A.P. be prepared ASAP. Release investigation and Corrective action required ASAP. | Don Gibler |
10/9/1992 | Update or Other Action | Received the Environmental Compliance Investigation Report. | Former Staff |

6/29/1994 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = RPL2 - Site Information Request Letter). Sent PRP-CS Database Notification Letter to RP requesting update and more environmental information concerning contaminated site. RP/Jackie for FAA Anchorage office responded to let me know she will be sending information on the facilities soon. Received information on 8-8-94. | Jeff Peterson |
8/8/1994 | Site Ranked Using the AHRM | Reranked (Based on DDT contaminated soil in addition to CERCLA sources). | Former Staff |
11/27/1995 | Update or Other Action | Summary of meeting on 11/8/1995 and proposed corrective action approaches. | Kent Patrick-Riley |
7/29/1996 | Update or Other Action | Received the Site Cleanup and Investigation Report. | Former Staff |
11/21/2005 | Update or Other Action | Building 300 Interior Sump: No Further Remedial Action Planned. In Site Cleanup and Investigation Report, dated 1996, field activities are described concerning the sump including the removal of an unspecified volume of soil (less than one drum). The sump was then filled with concrete after being sampled for VOCs and SVOCs. No contamination was found but it is unknown there are elevated concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons or metals in the soil beneath the sump. If in the future the concrete floor is removed, the soil under the concrete block of the sump should be sampled and managed in accordance with ADEC regulations. ADEC letter sent out November 21, 2005. | Anne Marie Palmieri |
6/15/2017 | Update or Other Action | DEC sent FAA a memorandum regarding contamination at the Fort Yukon FAA Sites including Quarters Facility Buildings 100, 101, 102, 300, and 601, and associated USTs, Incineration Areas and interior sumps (Hazard IDs 25397,25393,25395, and 25396) to assist FAA with compliance with State of Alaska Contaminated Sites Cleanup Regulations. DEC-required actions for cleanup complete determinations for each AOC were spelled out in detail. | John O'Brien |
9/24/2025 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | As determined in 2005, DEC has determined Bldg 300 Interior Sump has low concentrations of contamination remaining, and this contamination is currently inaccessible due to concrete flooring. The department determines that no further remedial action is planned for Bldg 300 Interior Sump. If, in the future, the concrete floor is removed and the soil below and around the sump is accessible, the area should be characterized and any contamination managed in accordance with department regulations and guidance. | AJ Hytry |
