Problems/Comments
The Native Village of Afognak submitted a 2009 DEC Brownfield Assessment Request for the Raspberry Strait Dumpsite. The site is located on the southernmost tip of Afognak Island bordering Raspberry Strait, approximately 50 feet south of an unimproved trail connecting Back Bay with the Russian settlement of Aleneva. According to a site assessment that was completed in 2005, most of the contamination was deposited since 2000. Data collected during the 2005 report indicate the presence of metals contamination above ADEC cleanup levels. The full extent of the contamination was not determined. It was also noted in the 2005 report that batteries and petroleum products were present in the dump. One surface soil sample collected during the 2005 site assessment from the east side of the main refuse pile, collected from beneath a bag of battery parts had lead concentrations up to 17,100 mg/kg and selenium concentration up to 26 mg/kg. Arsenic concentrations were elevated in all the samples collected from the dump but these may be considered background. FKA 2502.57.001.

| 4/22/2010 | Update or Other Action | DEC received the Property Assessment and Cleanup Plan for the Raspberry Strait Dump Site. In October of 2009, SLR conducted a field visit to assess the current condition of the Raspberry Strait Dump Site; interview individuals familiar with the property; and evaluate potential remedial strategies. Items in the dump that were identified during the field visit included: several freezers, one lead-acid battery, ATV parts and tires; aerosol canisters, paint cans, fuel containers, at least 14 apparent empty 55-gallon barrels, engines, oil containers, and electrical equipment.
